adriano canzian has by now developed a trademark sound unlike any other, a genre-twisting hybrid of ebm, techno, industrial and acid beats that has acquired nuance and influences throughout the years, aiming at that uniqueness he’s always been reaching for. confessions of a dangerous mind is a breathless, unrelenting march of a record, a whirlwind of classic industrial sounds driven by a hammering pulse and a shimmer of melting matter. david carretta’s remix smoothens out some edges into a mix of techno and new beats, then canzian charges on again with sick goates, skillfully adding noise frequencies to a goth background, before letting spain’s the plumbers close with their rendition of sleeplessness, marked by a dub-sprinkled techno no less belligerent than most of canzian’s catalogue.

trained in the art of deejay toasting by the legendary dennis alcapone, lester bulllock initially called himself alcapone junior, until maverick record producer lee scratch perry renamed him dillinger in the early 1970s, following his success on a west kingston sound system called smith the weapon, based in the ghetto of payne avenue. perry cut dillingers first dozen tracks, and there was early work for other producers such as prince tony, augustus pablo, enos mcleod and phil pratt, then, dillingers debut album, ready natty dreadie, was a local hit for studio one, but the cb200 set for island catapulted him to international prominence. yet, the dillinger material with the roughest edge was always produced by bunny striker lee, as this lp, answer my question, so amply demonstrates. first issued in the netherlands on the scramble label in 1977, it shows dillinger on fearsome form, his relaxed rhyming toasts tackling sound system matters, the rastafari lifestyle, action movie subplots, the highs and lows of romantic relationships, the need to help the less fortunate, and other burning issues of the day with biting wit and verbal dexterity, all delivered over tough aggrovators rhythms—including an unusual cut of the three piece suit rhythm. go deh! reissued on lp and cd, on cd for the first time ever!

under the moniker shed, pawlowitz published three highly ambitious albums in which he defined his work more and more as his own way of musical narration. the final experiment? is definitely the temporary highlight of this evolution. as musical work it does establish shed conclusively as one of the most interesting and substantial electronic music artists of our time. it carries a vibe, that links shed to other boundary breaking artists such as ryuichi nakamoto, brian eno and carsten nicolai. however, shed found a way to develop a highly individual way of communicating electronic music, that is self-sufficient. the last experiment is a mostly homogeneous piece of work, a meditation, where the stylistic confusion seems less important than then musical statement that it represents.

vanta series is the new series for killekill’s dancefloor music. the releases come in series, every series comes with a theme and one artwork which is being split in several parts to go with each release. the first series is called “the end is near” and features four records. it comes with an artwork by french visual artist elzo durt. vanta 003 comes from eomac under his alias eeoo. eeoo is a side project for what is, in eomac’s mind, straight up, techno-rave-house-jungle- disco influenced, dancefloor material. it draws influence from classic styles of dance music. less dense, less conceptual than the eomac-music. less focussed on texture and atmosphere, a more direct approach for sweaty ravers and moving bodies.

teja music start the year 2017 with an ep by uk producer darmec. after a number of top 10 hits in the beatport hardtechno chart, this ep named wisteria is his first ever release on vinyl. teja music also welcome remixers mono voice, joseph dalik, and no less than heavyweight techno producer mark greene himself.

adam port and jimpster have had a special kind of ‘virtual’ relationship the last few years with a mutual respect for each others productions and output of their respective labels. keinemusik, which adam runs alongside rampa, &me and reznik, has grown into one of the most consistent and hottest out there right now with every release creating a big splash and bringing magic to so many dancefloors around the world. adam recently remixed jimpster’s eel pie island to devastating effect bringing his own deep, late night atmospherics to the original and creating one of 2016’s underground hits in the process. so now we’re very pleased to welcome adam port (alongside legendary uk artists stereo mc’s) for a full release on freerange in the form of changes. opening the release we have adam’s own remix which sets the tone with a subtle and gently building groove providing the perfect backdrop for the stereo mc’s esoteric vocal. this lesson in restraint shows why adam’s productions work so well on big systems, letting all the focus shine firmly on the vocal creating an intense atmosphere with not a single huge breakdown in sight! next up we have the original of changes which takes a more electro approach with a simple bassline and crisp hats and once again allowing the vocal space to take centre stage for a deep and memorable track with a message. finally we have a remix from our own jimpster opts to push in a completely different direction. shuffling up the groove and laying down a repeating rhodes riff we’re treated to an altogether more soulful and less stark version making the perfect compliment to the the package. this one makes us think of his remix of osunlade’s momma’s groove which is no bad thing we feel! enjoy!

this label is founded by hungarian producer depthon (a contraction of the words -depth- and -on-) with a nonsensical approach to music. as said in the label s statement, the music released hereon, is also a reflection of the mindset of this techno artist. he came a long way, crawling through different genres but ending up in his favorite and most versatile style. and in january, his very first physical release of music will happen on his own imprint. an ep on black gold loaded with 4 weapons that are ready to add up to every quality techno mix and also will destroy the dance floor. 3 of depthon s own works and in addition a remix by glaswegian techno prodigy and sleaze records labelhead hans bouffmhyre. -last train- is the first pulsating and powerful track that works as the opening window of this ep, followed by the remix by bouffmyhre, which could could be described as an immaculate upgrade to the original. on the flipside, it s -faded- that is exemplary to the saying -less is more-: dark and simple pads on a compelling background that surely will keep one s attention throughout the course. last but not least is -timelapse- that contrary to the other tracks uses high pitched synths as a lead, in combination with hissing hi-hats and a constantly changing scenery.

one of the holy grail of the minimal synth and one of the most obscure musical projects ever produced in italy is finally reissued on mannequin records. originally released in 1981 by broadbean records, a sub-label of lm records, flo & andrew only release take suicide was home-recorded and home-mixed by the duo in bologna, using early drum machines like the boss dr-55 and the korg kr-55, analog synthesizers, guitar, saxophone, tape loops. flo & andrew music is truly unique and exemplifies the fact that limitation can be the perfect source for creativity. the title-track and to committ suicid’ travel through contort and nervous synth sounds and loops, taking somehow inspiration from the no wave heroes, while japanese girls is nothing less than a beautiful minimal electronics track in the mythology of the futuristic rise of japanese country. recently (re)discovered, ‘take suicide’ is a milestone of the european minimal synth singles and is not really a coincidence that a young generations of producers take it as inspiration (you can see take suicide floating in the tracklist of artists as helena hauff and ngly). another must have in your collection / record bag! mastering by ruud 66.

marcel vogels intimate friends label turns to an unknown entity for their next release, giving dear earth no less than a full album to run with as a first outing. that s a strong statement of conviction, and the label are right to be so bold as dear earth shows off the kind of inventive, sample-rich approach that makes your ears prick up in an instant. supposedly hailing from london, this mysterious figure has been trawling through all kinds of ephemera and stewing it into a soulful, meandering body of work that touches on house, downtempo broken beat and more besides

italian producer reekee has laid down soulful grooves for roots underground and wrong notes over the past year, and now he surfaces once again with this sumptuous turn for uzuri. bal-era is the perfect lead track, cultivating a classic deep house mood with passionate keys and synth lines, setting the scene for glenn underground to swoop in for an invigorating remix rich with saxophone goodness. black tobacco on the flip is a more subdued affair, but no less refined in its use of piano at the forefront of the mix, and then quartal ramps up the synth work without losing that infectious, soulful mood.

c powers was raised in atlanta, georgia, usa. he lives in savannah, georgia. he is resident dj for performance art drag collective house of gunt. he has also been resident dj at clubnights cape fear in savannah, hunger in atlanta and no pain in pop in london. he works in a library and is cat dad to peppers, bucchi, and baby d. his releases include the oysters ep for proper trax in 2015 and the up neck ep for cgi records in 2014. he produced the single crow for the group 18+ (from their album trust) as well as songs on their album collect. fitness check shows c powers s experience as a dj as well as his growth as a producer. from the drum programs to the arrangements, it s obvious that the ep was written and produced by someone who can work a dancefloor. on wysh, which he says is an exit reaction to morose and morbid- techno, subliminal speech and warped vocal stabs transition from centered to alert. on fresco he dices and scatters a song over loops of itself, a technique he calls -a grey area between sampling and editing,i break it up into bits, resequence that shit then stuff that shit back into the track.js may get even more service from the wysh key beats and fresco beatapella versions, which give jacking rhythm tracks and sub-bass extra room to do their thing. the heavily dubbed ask less kick beats, lighter on drums but with a booming bassline, may prove useful as a set-opener or closer. the ep has been mastered for club play by helmut erler at dubplates & mastering, berlin.

rare brazil album made available again through mr bongo, incl. voce abuso & kabaluere. nice! a truly fantastic record that sounds the way it looks – psychedelic rock, samba-funk and tripped out mpb. features kabaluere as sampled by marcelo d2 on his hit qual e. arranged by rogerio duprat, featuring legendary guitarist lanny gordin. antonio carlos & jocafi were a very successful and famous brazilian writing duo, born in bahia. they worked with the likes of wilson simonal, rosinha de valença, trio mocotó, milton banana, toquinho and more. originally released on rca brazil in 1971, this was the duos debut lp. two versions of the album cover exist in brazil – this, the psyched-out, burnt out version, and a much less exciting photograph of the chaps, pressed to include the single desacato which became a popular hit in brazil and several european countries.

an independent band since 1998, dub inc are nonetheless fully acclaimed by the entire reggae scene. the group won no less than three victoires du reggae awards (in 2014 for the paradise album, in 2011 for hors contrôle, and 2008 for afrikya). in 2016, they are back with a sixth lp, so what. no doubt this one will be yet another important landmark. completely self-produced, as is their habit and will, this fourteen-track record is the result of a long process of composing and writing songs inspired by the dark events that have been going on in france in the last few months. featuring a mix of dancehall, hip-hop, and electronica influences, so what is a pure reggae album upholding the values of this rebellious, spiritual, and universal music genre.

the second release on arcing seas by label heads cassegrain. this new material presents the duos very individual approach to tonality within the techno framework, combined with a subtle tribal influence. maintaining their aim, they keep things exciting for the club as well as sonically. label info: arcing seas is an anagram of cassegrain. it started out as a secret alias, releasing a couple eps on our circula sound. the secret was less well kept after the duo appeared at berghain under this name. a year later, after deciding to start a label, it finally made sense to bring the two together.

landing straight after 415-pr10, public releases first in a loose series of san francisco-centric compilations, this three-track 12inch is a further exploration of the bay areas sounds and aesthetics, though here its explored via remixes produced by friends from abroad. the a-side is a complete overhaul, reimagining, and extension of anonstops seaside by thee loving hand, tim goldsworthys solo moniker of choice these days. the ex-dfa records co-founder and former member of unkle took the tunes balearic foundation and used it as a bed for what one might mistake as a lost arthur russell cut from the world of echo era. joel wells lent his airy, light, sweet vocals to the track, while darren morris added synth work to bolster tim’s usual production genius. it’s carefree and emotive, the aural equivalent of a big, toothy smile. the flip features a mix thats a whole helluva lot more intense and uptempo, though no less positive than its original. chidas remix of domination is squarer and housier than beziers piece, which was glitzy classic disco dunked in italo, but enough of it remains to be unmistakably a spinoff. fiery and propulsive in the way a gulfstream jet is, its a ball of thunder that will electrify any set, any dance floor.

melodymathics hits the spot with the charleroi dc ep. a rare name for a very rare record. when you put fabrice lig & kink, 2 of the greatest liveperformers and analog lovers, together in a studio this is what you get! a track that easily stands out in any club, night & day. the ep is topped with some outstanding, quirky remixes by no one less than ian o’brien, dam swindle and label boss melodymann. it s hard to find words to describe the charleroi dc ep that’s why you have to listen and let the music speak for itself!

acclaimed be as one boss shlomi aber makes a big step up here by putting out a trio of his killer techno cuts on the always excellent and forward looking nonplus label run by boddika. his xy play ep continues in his no nonsense, floor facing style and impresses once more. shlomi aber is an underground titan who runs his own musical empire in the form of his be as one label. he has made it into an essential outlet for no frills house and techno and his own output has found him in fine favour with djs and dancers alike. playing all over the world and also serving as an expert at the emerging ibiza festival on the white isle, here he comes correct once more. the title ep xy play is a brain frying affair with cantering drums and stern synths bringing a dark and intone vibe to the groove. way old story is just as heads down but less ominous, here the synths are a little spooky and add intrigue to his slick rubbery drums. last but not least related sources is a hunched over house track with dub in its kick drums and a desolate industrial feel in the landscapes above. atmospheric from the first to the last moment, this is another killer ep from shlomi aber.

son dexter is a talented producer who released two fantastic eps on larry heard s alleviated in the early 2000 s. his influences are really extensive and diverse: deep house, funk, pop, hiphop, jazz, broken beat, rock, t-bone walker, black science orchestra, miles davis, lenny kravitz, al di meola, the intruders...and you can feel that in this eternity ep. when the canadian artist sent them this 4 tracks ep, the downbeat guys could not believe what they was hearing here. 4 colourful and delicate pearls full of nuances, strength and optimism which reminds us that its possible still to find purity and unconditional love for music. house? soul? pop? just music. nothing more, nothing less.

marco bernardi, a british producer with quite a flamboyant personality is no stranger to the burek family. having already released an excellent 2-part 12 series titled laffer ep for barba last year, it couldve been expected that hed appear on the mothership at some point. as on those two records, theres plenty of synth action going on, although with a little bit more restraint and less roughness.

the europe-centered techno scene might be thinking: where is techno in a city as vast, dynamic and electric as new york? it’s alive and well, and keeps growing through aptly-named new york trax. founded in 2016 and based in brooklyn, new york trax is an outlet for new york music, by new york artists, in new york city. new york trax 02 was written by boris brenecki (ontal, impulse controls), who has recently relocated to new york, starting a new chapter in his life and artistic career. this record is the very first material he produced in new york, heavily inspired by the city and its people. ‘the oven’, with its continuous filthy groove intensified by metallic percussions, is a serious candidate for an instant classic and a deadly weapon when used on a dancefloor. the grittiness of “the oven” was depicted through images of the less beaten paths of new york in a well-received official video published recently by the label. dark yet insanely dynamic “transit system”, based on field recordings of the new york city subway, opens with a bang the b side of the record, followed by “strictly hardcore”, a sonic manifesto of brutality. get it while it’s hot!

after the sweat-soaked throwback fervour of his 2015 debut lp, unknown to the unknown and hot haus main man dj haus returns to rinse for a brand new 10-track album, “artificial intelligence”. working at a formidably high rate of productivity, haus returns with this new record less than 12 months after his last, and he shows no signs of slowing down, maintaining his reputation for creating hard-edged dance anthems that leave a lasting effect on the dancefloor.

after three years and ten eps, amsterdam s will & ink label offers up its first full length from label favorite yaleesa hall and is called woodall. it explores texture, space and sound design in fascinating ways. since 2014 yaleesa hall has released four eps on the label and has become known for breakbeat laced stripped-down techno. this debut album finds the producer indulging a less dance floor focussed version of his sound, and one that is better suited to the full length format. explaining that his tracks most often start as -sound structures and experiments- that then get reworked for the club, here they stay closer to their original forms. woodall is sound sculpture that is electronic and synthetic but also made of real world sounds that are all truly absorbing. comes in gatefold sleeve.

petter svensson aka nebula recently had a release out co-operated with kord which sound were more in the hard techno ebm edge. here is a more limited sound and so far nebula has it s limited gear... neverless, here is -less is more- used no other gear than an old yamaha drummachine, some volca and a mastersynth. co-operation and post-production by jbs.

lil silva’s new ep sees him exploring love and meaning in his unique hybrid uk production idiom. less tied to the frenetic pace of his for club play only instrumentals, “jimi” sees him modulate through textures, in a meditative state of mind, traveling his inner visions and memories. silva’s vocals are weaved through tracks “the play”, “lines” and “struggle” while newcomer cosima contributes to the spine-tingling “caught up” and los angeleno singer kent jamz blesses the epic night time soul of “de ja”. the ep has received big support on radio from the likes of benji b, annie mac, four tet, gilles peterson and mistajam, with “de ja” being placed on the bbc 1xtra a list and “caught up” featuring on the rinse fm a list.

the album was written, produced, and distributed in garys hometown baltimore, between 1986 and 1987. after a break from performing while getting belated college degrees, gary returned to performing in the early 21st century, back to the singer/songwriter style of his past. gary feels that the generic art ensemble/original soundtrack days gave him an ability to open up his writing. his recent albums feature guitar, but many songs do have keyboards added to give them a fuller, less folky sound.

escorting sarah hit the ground running with ‘elephant in my box’, its low slung cavernous kick drum making a serious statement of intent before the the track’s grimy synth pushes forth to serve up some deliciously sleazy warehouse vibes. ‘pov’ ups the dirt considerably, metallic shards of phunk permeate, their edges rubbed raw with distortion whilst ‘spank’ offers up a sleeker, but no less deadly, slab of techno weaponry.

here is a new member to the et family: utroid. behind this project goes the producer who was once known as funxiun and bs-1. the biggest difference between utroid and the former projects is that the music is less hectic as before. with utroid the music moves into a more minimal direction while keeping the raw beats and rough vibe. you could call this new beat 2.0 or acid beat…. what you get are dancefloor orientated tracks that range from rather distorted to trippy and spacey…

zarenzeit is a band project by the label owners with lead keyboarder and producer george btp, also known as allstarr motomusic or dan piu. after several live projects back in the 90ies, the band releases its first full album as black inside with vocalist debra jones davis and sarignia bonfà. the lp infuses deep soulful house and 80ies funk elements, starting with the ambient house drift of time travel, which soon settles into a classic rare synth pop as 2souls, 1heart, while let them know they won blasts more into the spacy and light dancefloor. sarignia s lovely gospel version of talk about a child, ends the album on a spare, but no less grooving, note. quality house music not only for adults.
